Last week, I visited Bangkok to moderate Nikkei Asia Forum APAC 2026, an international conference hosted by Nikkei. During a panel discussion featuring Asian business leaders, one comment that particularly stood out came from Thammasak Sethaudom, president and CEO of SCG. Rather than viewing the current energy crisis as a temporary shock, he argued that it requires a long-term, structural response. With tensions between Iran and the United States worsening, it's becoming increasingly clear that it'll take a much longer time for the Strait of Hormuz, a vital artery for energy exports to Asia, to return to pre-crisis conditions. The SCG chief said he is seeing a structural shift in global energy supply and stressed that all companies need to diversify their energy sources.
