China boy, 12, inspires millions after defying muscle-wasting disease prognosis of living past 3

‘Little warrior’ Zou graduates from primary school, thanks to his family’s devotion and warmth of teachers and classmates A 12-year-old boy in eastern China with a rare disease has graduated from primary school in June, defying doctors who had predicted he would not live beyond the age of three. Zou Weiluo, from Shanghai, was diagnosed at seven months with spinal muscular atrophy, or SMA, a condition that progressively weakens the muscles used for movement, swallowing and breathing. Years of devoted care from his family helped him outlive the prognosis, and he could now move his fingers and flex his elbows slightly, according to The Paper. When the first SMA treatment became available in China, each dose cost up to 700,000 yuan (US$103,000). After it was added to the national medical insurance scheme in 2021, the price fell to 33,000 yuan, allowing Zou to receive his first injection. To distract himself, he asked a doctor to give him a maths problem before the procedure. The pain prevented him from finishing it, but his courage earned him the nickname “little warrior”.

China’s Africa lending model has a split personality

Support us China takes a commercial approach to infrastructure lending in Africa. Image: X Screengrab Over the past two decades, China’s rise as the world’s largest bilateral creditor has profoundly altered the global development finance landscape. Yet international scholarship on Chinese sovereign lending — especially to Africa — remains trapped in a binary: Western-centric “debt-trap diplomacy” narratives versus Beijing’s “South-South cooperative altruism” rhetoric. Understanding this requires moving beyond these ideological framings to analyze the macroeconomic externalities of China’s internal economic architecture — specifically, a “dual system” China has employed in its overseas financing over the past 30 years: internal Keynesianism paired with external neoliberalism. In other words, China’s overseas sovereign credit acts internally as a macroeconomic vent for domestic state-Keynesian industrial overcapacity, while its external execution relies on pragmatic, depoliticized and commercialized market mechanisms that mirror neoliberal risk-mitigation frameworks.

Appetite for yuan assets sees London Clearing House accept dim sum bonds as collateral

Bank of China led roll-out, with three of its overseas units executing first transactions The London Clearing House (LCH) has begun accepting offshore yuan-denominated Chinese government bonds as eligible non-cash collateral, marking a structural milestone in Beijing’s decade-long push to internationalise its currency and integrate its debt into global financial pipelines. The decision by LCH – a major derivatives clearing house owned by the London Stock Exchange Group – allows investors to use offshore yuan sovereign bonds, or dim sum bonds, to meet margin requirements. The move comes amid a growing appetite for yuan assets, driven by China’s expanding multitrillion-dollar domestic bonds market, the world’s second-largest. Historically, foreign investors faced hurdles utilising yuan assets in Western clearing houses due to a strict collateral framework that favoured United States Treasuries and European bonds.

Can Australian uranium fuel India’s nuclear future without sparking an arms race?

A new deal gives Delhi access to the world’s largest known uranium reserves for ‘peaceful’ use, advancing its nuclear energy goals Analysts said the agreement would help India shore up fuel security for its planned nuclear expansion, while also signalling deeper strategic trust between two Indo-Pacific partners seeking to reduce energy vulnerabilities and strengthen cooperation in civilian nuclear power. While few details were immediately available – such as the volumes to be supplied – the pact is expected to play a role in expanding the country’s nuclear capacity to 100 gigawatts by 2047, up from about 8GW. India does not have sufficient domestic uranium to meet its long-term nuclear energy ambitions, forcing heavy reliance on imports, according to the World Nuclear Association. Australia had previously refused to sell uranium to India because Delhi was not a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty designed to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons.

Yemen’s Houthis fire missiles at Saudi Arabia in biggest flare-up in years

The Iran-backed rebels targeted Saudi Arabia hours after accusing the kingdom of attacking Sanaa airport Yemen’s Houthi movement fired missiles at Saudi Arabia after accusing the kingdom of bombing an airport under their control on Monday, breaking a four-year truce in the conflict between the kingdom and the Iran-aligned group. Saudi Arabia intercepted missiles “launched by the terrorist Houthi militia toward the southern region,” the spokesperson for a Saudi-led military coalition in Yemen said on X. Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said ‌they had targeted the international airport in Saudi Arabia’s Abha, the capital of a mountainous southern region bordering Yemen where many Saudis escape the summer heat. The strikes are the first claimed by the Houthis against Saudi Arabia since an informal truce went into effect in March 2022 following Houthi attacks on Saudi energy infrastructure. Monday’s violence threatened renewed conflict on Saudi Arabia’s southern border after Iranian drone and missile attacks targeting its eastern regions and Riyadh subsided following an April truce in the Iran conflict.
