While tensions between the rival superpowers simmer over issues ranging from trade to artificial intelligence to Taiwan, the leaders emphasized stability. "We do not need to avoid mentioning competition," Xi said in remarks at the White House. "But our competition should be a healthy one, and should be kept within bounds." Hosting a state dinner for Xi, Trump highlighted their countries' historic ties.
